ANIMAL SURF ACADEMY

The Animal Surf Academy has been established as a demonstration of our commitment to taking British surfing to another level. We want to promote the sport in the UK and get more people in the water having fun and learning about surfing.

The ASA is open all summer from April to September and is based in Polzeath and Newquay, Cornwall.

The ASA caters for surfers of all abilities from beginner upwards. If you’ve never tried surfing before, the ASA instructors will be on hand to guide you through the first steps and take you out for your first session in the waves. If you’ve got the basics but want to take the next step, there are sessions which will enable you to reach the next stage.

We have joined forces with Wavehunters UK who operate ASA Polzeath near Wadebridge in North Cornwall, and Overhead Surf who operate ASA Newquay with their HQ on the beach at Tolcarne, and also run lessons on Fistral beach. Both operators have a strong commitment to providing safe, fun surf lessons.

We welcome surfers of all levels to make the most of what the Animal Surf Academy has to offer and sign up for a lesson this summer!

FIRST TIMERS

Get in the water and learn the basics with surf lessons at the Animal Surf Academy.

These classes introduce you safely to the water and how the ocean works. The essential objective is for you to enjoy yourself and have a taster surfing session so you can make the most of your first surfing experience.

Our BSA approved surf instructors will be on hand to give you guidance and encouragement. With our help you could even be standing by the end of your first lesson!

Lessons include all necessary equipment including wetsuit and surfboard.

"We’ve all been a beginner at some point, embrace it in all its naivety, open your mind and let the waves and the power of the ocean show you the way, once you stop trying to fight the power of the ocean you will be walking on water before you know it."
MATT WRIGHT First Timer, August 2006

IMPROVERS

These classes are for surfers that have progressed to standing on the board almost every time, or who have been surfing for a while and need someone to take them to the next level. With guidance from our experienced BSA surf instructors the sessions will begin to teach you how to read a wave, traverse the swell and make sure that you maximise your time in the water!

Lessons include all necessary equipment including wetsuit and surfboard.

DEVELOPERS

The Developers class guides you through the most effective techniques for paddling ‘out back’ including locating the rip and saving valuable energy! The lessons will start to look at your style and work on manoeuvres to maximise each wave. This lesson caters for those who have reached a plateau in their surfing and don’t seem to be progressing – we can help you move to the next stage.

"I don’t think you ever stop learning as every wave is different, but it’s the funniest and one of the most challenging learning curves you will ever go on."

ANIMAL TEAM RIDER WORKSHOPS

Get in the water and learn to surf with the Animal team riders.

On selected days throughout the summer Animal’s team of sponsored riders will be at exclusive workshops held at the Animal Surf Academy.

These sessions are for anyone that would like to learn from the guys who spend their lives surfing around the world. This is a chance to try surfing and ask the professionals anything from how long they’ve been surfing to the most exotic place they’ve travelled to in search of the best waves.

A typical day includes a surf lesson, beach picnic, surf safety and equipment session and a FREE goodie bag to take home with you. Sign up early to get your place, for more information on times and dates check our News page.

Come and meet the Animal surf team! Among those sponsored by Animal are Alan Stokes, Mitch Corbett, and longboarder Elliot Dudley.

“As a pro surfer it’s refreshing to put some time back into surfing development and rewarding to see these guys pushing their technique and learning new skills. I’m looking forward to more days in the water with the ASA crew this summer.” ALAN STOKES Pro Team Rider

ASA GIRLS ONLY DAYS

Girls! Get in the water and sign up for the Animal Surf Academy Girls Only days this summer.

Designed by girls, for girls, the ASA Girls Only workshops are a fun way to try surfing and pick up some tips from the Animal girl surf team who have travelled the world to surf and compete. With former British Champion Nicola Bunt and three-time Irish National Champion, Easkey Britton, you will be in good hands to try surfing for the first time*, or to pick up some extra tips from the Animal team and take your surfing further.

Each session includes a surf lesson, yoga stretch, a surf seminar about the best equipment, surf safety tips and a chance to meet, ask questions and learn from the Animal girl team riders … not to mention a free goodie bag to take home with you! What more could a budding surfer need!

The Girls Only workshops will be happening throughout the summer – so make sure you book early and get a place!

Make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.

"Working with the ASA crew has been a great experience for me, it takes me back to the fun days when I was learning and developing my technique. Whatever the level of the girls in the group they all come out of the water with stories to tell and excited about their next session, which is what surfing is all about!" Nicola Bunt Pro Team Rider

Grom Club

The Grom Club is designed to give youngsters maximum time in the water with the ASA team.

The club takes places twice a week all season and allows kids to really progress with their surfing. Membership to the club allows you to enjoy full use of the Animal Surf Academy and includes two lessons a week as well as use of all the surf equipment throughout the season. You will also enjoy a discount at the Wavehunters shop in Port Isaac and Overhead Surf shop in Newquay.

Membership to the Grom Club starts in April and runs until the end of September.

Private Lessons

At the ASA we believe that the personal touch is important when teaching people to learn to surf.

It is a natural progression for us to offer private lessons for individuals, groups and families. As your surfing progresses sometimes the best way to really improve is to have a dedicated one-to-one surf lesson so your BSA instructor can focus on you. These lessons run for 2.5 hours and can be booked at the time best for you.

For more information on booking private lessons please contact the ASA team.

Lessons include all necessary equipment including wetsuit and surfboard.
